We fully embraced all of the awesome Fargo Marathon events this year! We made custom Saving Smiles shirts and had participants in the dog run, kids run, 5k and 1/2 marathon! What a fun community event to be a part of. Kuddos to the Fargo Marathon team for all of their planning and execution of an amazing week of fun! We can’t wait to do it all again next year!

Dr. Johnson’s passion for Star Wars is always a reason for us to celebrate May the 4th Be With You. This year we were given the opportunity to serve in the dining room at Salvation Army. It was a wonderful experience and so fun to get out of the office and give back to the community. Our team dressed in Star Wars gear and Jane even wore a Darth Vader mask! We hope we can partner with them to volunteer again, even if it isn’t on Star Wars day.

Morning and bedtime routines are hard enough without having to deal with brushing and flossing, but they are important habits to start early! Here are some tips to help get your kids to brush and floss 2 times per day (morning and night) for 2 minutes each:

Brushing
• Let them pick out their toothbrush (remember to replace every 3 to 4 months)
• Brush with them – the family that brushes together, smiles together
• Reward brushing with a sticker or a bedtime story (preferably not candy 😉)
• Play one of these fun videos while they brush:

Flossing
Make it fun! Practice flossing with Legos and Play-Doh. Then move on to adding it to their daily routine. See Dr. Johnson’s video example.

Saving Smiles had the opportunity to volunteer with Hope Blooms.

We heard from the wonderful Kelly Krenzel about her journey of inspiring hope, happiness and emotional healing through repurposed flowers and the formation of Hope Blooms. She shared her passion for spreading joy by demonstrating how to repurpose a flower donation into beautiful bedside bouquets.

We jumped right in and created 57 beautiful bouquets. The flowers that we tended to included blooms in many different shades of blue, so we felt like the bouquets had a special touch from the Saving Smiles crew. The flowers were delivered to residents at Maple View Memory Care in Fargo.

The event was a great way for our team to gather and give back. If you are looking for a fun volunteer or team building event, checkout the opportunities they have at https://www.hopeblooms.org/volunteer/.

If you are expecting, don’t forget about your teeth. Many women have no dental changes through their pregnancy, however increased hormone levels and blood flow can affect your teeth and gums. Keep up with your regular oral hygiene habits to minimize problems from occurring:

  1. Brush 2x a Day
  2. Floss daily
  3. Visit the Dentist

Here are some of the common causes of dental health problems during pregnancy:

First things first. Brush your teeth twice a day, every day. Second, if you’re considering an electronic toothbrush with oscillating or sonic technology (like an Oral-B Pro 5000 or  a Phillips Sonicare), consider the pros and cons of investing in an electronic toothbrush.

Pros:
• Better at removing plaque and preventing gum disease
• Easier to use (especially for arthritis)
• Built-in timers
• Fun for kids
• Comes with travel chargers/cases

Cons:
• Costs more
• Needs to be charged
• You have to buy replacement heads
• Breakable

Dr. Johnson, our very own “Floss Boss” is in Fargo Inc. this month! He was chosen as one of the monthly Faces of Fargo. Dr. Johnson had the opportunity to chat about his career, taking over practices to help other dentists make their way to retirement, and of course about his love for Star Wars.
